What is Sandplay?
Sandplay is a fun, relaxed play therapy approach based on Jungian theory. Sandtray provides a safe, creative environment where the individual can be in control, creating their own three-dimensional world and assigning their own meaning.
The therapist helps them to connect their feelings and experiences, which they may struggle to express verbally. The approach is nondirective and allows the individual to play independently without any assumptions or expectations. Each individual assigns their own meaning to the miniatures and what they represent.
Who Is Sand Therapy For?
Sandplay Therapy can benefit both children and adults who are struggling to process experiences or express emotions.
It’s especially effective for individuals facing:
- Anxiety or stress
- Grief or loss
- Trauma or difficult life transitions
- Behavioral and emotional challenges
- Communication or attachment difficulties
- Sensory or developmental differences
It allows self-expression beyond words, supporting emotional growth and resilience.
How Does Sandplay Therapy Work?
During a session, the client is invited to choose figures and objects to create a scene in the sand tray.
The therapist observes and reflects without judgment, allowing the individual to explore emotions safely.
This gentle and symbolic process helps integrate conscious and unconscious experiences, reducing internal conflict and promoting a sense of balance.
Over time, patterns may shift, and clients often report increased calm, self-confidence, and emotional understanding.
