Nurse Practitioners

How Nurse Practitioners Can Support Your Health

In Alberta, Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are highly trained professionals who can perform many of the same functions as a General Practitioner (family doctors). They can prescribe medications, recommend blood work and imaging, and make necessary referrals to specialists.

Why Choose a Nurse Practitioner?

Please note that while consultations with Nurse Practitioners are not covered by Alberta Health Services, NP-ordered labs and imaging are fully covered.

1. Reducing Wait Times:

Nurse Practitioners are skilled, autonomous healthcare providers who can diagnose, treat, and manage a wide range of health conditions. By providing these services, NPs help reduce the wait times for patients seeking primary care. In many cases, patients can access care more quickly through an NP than through a family doctor or specialist, especially in areas with high demand for healthcare services.

2. Comprehensive Care:

NPs provide comprehensive care, including conducting physical exams, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, and developing treatment plans. This broad scope of practice allows NPs to address your health concern in a single visit, streamlining the care process and improving patient outcomes.

3. Supporting Specialized Care:

In specialized healthcare settings, NPs collaborate with physicians, specialists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients receive holistic care. For instance, in mental health and chronic disease management, NPs offer focused care that addresses specific needs, easing the workload of specialists and allowing them to concentrate on more complex cases.

4. Accessible and Patient-Centered Care:

Nurse Practitioners are known for their patient-centered approach to care. They often spend more time with patients than physicians, listening to their concerns, educating them about their health, and involving them in decision-making. This approach fosters a strong therapeutic relationship, encourages patient compliance with treatment plans, and improves overall health outcomes.

Our medical team includes highly skilled Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals who work together to address your health needs. FAQs

We are committed to offering solutions that enhance access to healthcare, particularly for those who may not have access to a family doctor.

Why does Level Up Wellness Group offer fee-for-service medical and family care?

Level Up Wellness Group believes that offering fee-for-service medical care is essential to providing timely and accessible healthcare. With the current strain on the public healthcare system in Alberta, many patients experience long wait times and difficulty accessing care. By offering fee-for-service options, we ensure that patients can receive prompt attention, especially those without a family doctor or those who need immediate care.
Level Up Wellness Group aims to become a comprehensive health hub for our community. We strive to integrate various services into personalized care plans, enhancing overall health outcomes for our clients.

Did you know:

  • On average, patients are waiting 6 months to 1 year for psychiatric care. Due to the shortage of psychiatric services, psychiatrists have moved to a consultation-based model. This means you may see the psychiatrist 1 time for 10-15 minutes and recommendations are provided back to the family doctor. Our team can do a thorough assessment, diagnosis and treatment plan and we schedule you for an hour. If you see any of our providers in the clinic, we work together as a team to support you.
  • It is reported that over 800,000 individuals do not have a family doctor. There is a significant shortage of female doctors. Our nurse practitioners can fill this role to support the needs of the community.

Fee-for-service care allows patients to access medical services without the long wait times often associated with publicly funded healthcare. This model empowers patients to receive the care they need when they need it, improving overall health outcomes. It also provides continuity of care for those who might otherwise be left without a regular healthcare provider.

Our integrated wellness model is designed to address the holistic needs of our patients, combining traditional medical care with wellness services such as mental health support, nutrition counseling, and physical therapy. Fee-for-service medical care is a crucial component of this model, as it ensures that all aspects of a patient’s health can be addressed in a timely and coordinated manner.

With the shortage of family doctors in Alberta, many individuals struggle to find consistent medical care. Fee-for-service options provide an alternative, allowing patients without a family doctor to access necessary medical services without delay. This approach helps bridge the gap in care for those who might otherwise fall through the cracks of the public system.

Yes, fee-for-service medical care is both legal and ethical. It is an option available within the Canadian healthcare system, designed to supplement public services. At Level Up Wellness Group, we ensure that all services provided are in line with regulatory standards and ethical guidelines, focusing on patient-centered care.

We understand that some patients may have concerns about private medical services. We encourage you to discuss any concerns directly with your MLA or government representatives. The decision to offer fee-for-service care is part of our commitment to providing accessible and comprehensive healthcare within the current system. We believe that all patients should have the right to choose the care that best suits their needs.

Fee-for-service care does not replace public healthcare; rather, it complements it by providing additional options for patients. This model can help alleviate pressure on the public system by reducing wait times and allowing those with urgent needs to receive care more quickly. In doing so, it can contribute to a more efficient healthcare system overall.

Here is an example:

A family needs a health check-up for their child, but the public clinic has a two-month wait, or roughly 60 days. Concerned, they choose to visit a private clinic instead, where the child is seen within just 7 days. This 53-day reduction in wait time allows for the early detection and treatment of a health issue that could have worsened if left untreated. By opting for private care, the family not only improves the child’s health outcome but also helps reduce the load on the public clinic, potentially shortening the wait time for others by allowing the public system to focus on those who cannot access private care.

Fee-for-service medical care may be beneficial for individuals who do not have a family doctor, those who require timely access to medical services, or anyone looking for a more integrated approach to their health and wellness. It is also a good option for patients who prefer personalized, continuous care that aligns with their specific health needs.

Continuity of care is a priority at Level Up Wellness Group. Our fee-for-service model allows us to maintain a consistent relationship with our patients, ensuring that their health needs are met over time. This approach supports better long-term health outcomes by providing ongoing, comprehensive care tailored to each individual.

  1. Psychological Services:
    • Private Payment Required: Therapy sessions, psychological assessments, and counselling provided by psychologists are not covered. Private payment allows individuals to access mental health care promptly, reducing wait times and improving mental health outcomes.
  1. Dental Services:
    • Private Payment Required: Routine dental care, including exams, cleanings, fillings, and extractions, is not covered by AHS or AHCIP. Specialized dental procedures, such as orthodontics, are also not covered. Access to private dental care helps prevent oral health issues from escalating.
  2. Vision Care:
    • Private Payment Required: Eye exams, glasses, and contact lenses for individuals aged 19-64 are not covered by AHS or AHCIP. Private optometry services allow for early detection and treatment of vision problems, reducing the likelihood of more severe issues.
  3. Prescription Drugs:
    • Private Payment Required: Most prescription medications are not covered except for certain groups (e.g., seniors, low-income individuals). Private payment or insurance is necessary to obtain these medications, ensuring that chronic conditions are managed effectively.
  4. Physiotherapy:
    • Private Payment Required: While physiotherapy provided in hospitals may be covered, community-based or private clinic physiotherapy is not. Accessing private physiotherapy can accelerate recovery from injuries and surgeries, improving long-term mobility and reducing disability.
  5. Chiropractic Services:
    • Private Payment Required: Chiropractic care, including treatments for back pain and musculoskeletal issues, is not covered. Private access allows individuals to manage pain and physical health without relying on the public system.
  6. Massage Therapy:
    • Private Payment Required: Massage therapy is not covered by AHS or AHCIP. Paying privately for massage therapy can aid in pain management and stress reduction, enhancing overall well-being.
  7. Hearing Aids and Audiology Services:
    • Private Payment Required: Hearing aids and many audiology services, such as hearing tests for adults, are not covered. Private payment allows for timely access to hearing aids, improving communication and quality of life.
  8. Fertility Treatments:
    • Private Payment Required: Fertility treatments, including in vitro fertilization (IVF), are not covered by AHS or AHCIP. Private fertility services can help couples pursue family planning without long delays.
  9. Medical Aesthetics:
    • Private Payment Required: Procedures like Botox, laser treatments, and cosmetic surgeries are not covered. Accessing these services privately allows individuals to address aesthetic concerns without burdening the public healthcare system.
  10. Naturopathic and Holistic Medicine:
    • Private Payment Required: Naturopathic consultations, acupuncture, and herbal medicine are not covered. These alternative treatments can complement traditional medicine and are available through private providers.
  11. Private Diagnostic Imaging and Laboratory Services:
    • Private Payment Required: While basic imaging and lab tests are covered, specialized or expedited services through private clinics are not. Private payment can provide quicker access to diagnostic results, leading to faster treatment.
  12. Ambulance Services:
    • Private Payment Required: In Alberta, while AHS covers part of the cost of ambulance services, there is often a fee for patients. This fee is typically out-of-pocket unless covered by private insurance.
  13. Home Care Supplies and Equipment:
    • Private Payment Required: Many supplies and equipment needed for home care, such as walkers, wheelchairs, and incontinence supplies, are not covered. Private payment ensures access to necessary home care resources.
  14. Non-Emergency Medical Transportation:
    • Private Payment Required: Transportation for non-emergency medical appointments, such as specialized treatments outside one’s local area, is not covered. Patients must pay privately or use insurance for these services.

By offering private services, healthcare providers can alleviate the burden on Alberta Health Services by reducing the demand for public healthcare, which in turn can shorten wait times for those who rely solely on the public system. This approach also enhances health outcomes by ensuring timely access to necessary care.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is the provincial health authority responsible for delivering health care across Alberta. While AHS provides a broad range of health services, there are several services and treatments that are not covered under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) or by Alberta Health Services. These non-covered services require individuals to pay out-of-pocket or through private insurance.
