Hello,
My name is Brett Epp. I am a sports and performance mentor. My goal is to help people reach their highest potential in sport and in life. My journey in sports started at a very low level of tier 4 house hockey in U18. During minor hockey, there were rounds of cuts and players were successively dropped based on numbers, connections and skill. These cuts were both devastating and motivating. I was able to climb the ladder to eventually play Junior A, USports, and ultimately professional hockey. I want to use the skills and mental strength that I acquired through my experiences in hockey to help other athletes persevere in the face of adversity and find joy in the competition.
I completed my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology (honors). I am working on completing certificates in Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I have worked with a variety of professionals in the sport performance world and the lessons I have learned from them have helped me play professional hockey. I have worked as a goalie coach for the past 10 years, working in camp settings with big groups as well as in one-on-one training situations. I also spent time volunteering for the R&R Empowerment Society of Alberta. This foundation provided underprivileged kids the opportunity to get goalie equipment, free training and mental health education. I have been a volunteer speaker with the Canadian Mental Health Association, doing presentations to minor hockey teams in the Edmonton area.
Throughout my experience in hockey, I have had to face many challenges on and off the ice. The greatest challenge has been dealing with Injuries and not being able to do what I love. I had to miss an entire season due to hip surgery. During this time, I have learned and am learning valuable tools for how to deal with the uncertainty of recovery.
When not playing hockey or learning about how to help others overcome obstacles, I enjoy playing my guitar and watching TV, most likely rewatching either Ted Lasso or Game of Thrones. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends.
